The Interpreter's Tapestry

Suitable Dress Tips

These assignments are televised and have no/few on-site consumers. As such, dress should be geared for best visibility on camera.

  • Tops should be in medium (not dark or light) colors in contrast with the skin tone. Medium blues, and greens, work well on my pale skin tone; however, reds should be of a darker, more maroon shade. Avoid black as the background is black and you may appear to have a floating head and hands! Light colors can wash out to match the hands.

  • Tops with high necklines and turtlenecks work well to prevent your hand from blending in with the neck and upper chest while fingerspelling.

  • Black bottoms work well to blend in with the background (and help reduce the 10 pounds the camera adds!)

  • These are government business meetings. Business casual should be the minimum standard for dress (no jeans, sweats, etc.)
